2007 - What a Year! - 13/12/2007

What a year 2007 has been! It started dry and hot and by June we were well down on our annual rainfall and looking towards a hard dry spring and summer. How true is the saying about being careful what you wish for - in June the heavens opened and it rained, and rained. In one 4 day session we received over 250 mm of rain - we lost the walls of 2 new dams but thankfully no other damage or loss of livestock. Now, as we come to the end of 2007 we are already over our average annual rainfall, there is a lot of sub-soil moisture and the pastures are looking magnificent. At least around Dungog, the predictions of a La Nina weather pattern appear to be true and we are going into 2008 with some degree of confidence.

It has been a busy 18 months since we purchased Pilchers and commenced a major development program. When we arrived, there were effectively 4 paddocks with very tired fences - we have now re-fenced the whole property into 15 paddocks with a laneway system running front to back. A major yard complex and AI/ET setup has been built near the sheds and we have sunk a bore and plumbed in water to all the paddocks. Permanent pastures have been established in the front paddocks and with all the rain we have locked up the Lucerne to cut for hay later in the year.

David Caslick joined us as stud manager in August last year, moving from Fingal in Tasmania with Monique, Sarah and Tim. He tells me he couldn't wait to get away from the depths of Tasmanian winters! Under David's guidance, we are now well advanced with our livestock and genetics programmes. We started with 48 Angus cows purchased from Lawsons in 2006. They have adapted well to the move from Victoria and we are underway with the second year's AI program. The young bulls from the Spring 2006 drop are looking magnificent and we are targeting these, and their sisters for sale in Autumn 2008 - we'll be providing more information soon.

We also now have our full complement of donor cows and bull for the fullblood Wagyu program. We'll be running everything as ET programs: we have our own herd of over 100 Angus recipients and currently over 100 recipient cows under supply agreements. If you are interested in growing out our FB Wagyus David would be delighted to talk to you more.

So much has happened this year and there are so many people to thank for all their hard work: David and Monique - I hope the move from Tassie has been worthwhile; Dom Bayard, our genetics guru from Global Reproduction Solutions; Harry Lawson for breeding such magnificent Angus cows; and all the people from Dungog for welcoming us all.

Have a great Christmas and best wishes for 2008.

Andrew Macpherson
